SKIES (Spirited Kids in Engineering and Science)
TWO-week camps for Junior Beavers (grades 1-2) and Dam Builders (grades 3-5)
KidSpirit and the School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) offer science and engineering activities for children in grades (as of fall 2008) 1 through 5. Kids will experiment with chemistry, physics, math, life science, ecology and engineering in a fun, interactive , informal education al environment. SKIES was founded through a grant from the Hewlett Foundation to the OSU College of Engineering and is currently funded through the Center for Outreach in Science and Engineering for Youth (COSEY), a collaboration of OSU Precollege Programs, the College of Engineering, and the College of Science.
2008 SKIES Sessions:
- Matter Matters - June 16-27
- Earth, Wind, Fire and Water - July 7-18
- How to Plan Your Summer - July 21-August 1
- Session Dates & Fees - August 4-15
- Class Descriptions - August 18-29
Matter Matters • June 16-27
Explore the world of growing dinos, gel beads, silly putty, Gak, superabsorbant
polymers….and many more slimy, stretchy, and bouncy things!
Earth, Wind, Fire and Water...the Science and Engineering in the World • July 7-18
Explore the wonders of the world from geological formations on earth to the planets, stars and the universe. The world around us is full of fascinating concepts in science and engineering to explore, and we’ll take you along on some of these explorations.
Nutrition and Food Chemistry• July 21–August 1
Explore kitchen chemistry (what you can do right in your home), crystals, and the
“coolness” of dry ice and liquid nitrogen on a hot summer day! This year, we are
adding nutrition concepts, such as how many calories does it take to breathe,
run, do sit-ups or walk. You are what you eat...and we’ll look into that window and
see if we like what’s there!
Environmental Science and Ecology • August 4-15
Dive into the world of living things (habitats, animals, and adaptations) and what we can do to help keep our world a special place for all. From global warming to alternative fuels....there’s lots to do and even more to think about!
Engineering • August 18-29
Learn how engineers help save the world (or at least do cool things) that change our everyday lives….i-Pods, biodiesel, Segways, plastics, artificial organs, water treatment, and much more!
